The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released its most recent report, which highlights the state of our climate and how we can tackle climate change. Here’s what you need to know about the report:

Who are IPCC?

The IPCC is a United Nations body made up of 195 member countries that assesses the science related to climate change. Its aim is to provide accurate science to governments to base their climate policies around.

What the IPCC Climate report tells us?

As of 2020, human activity has caused a global surface temperature rise of 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels, which is edging closer to the 1.5°C limit suggested by the IPCC in 2018. The report highlights the following:

  • The last decade has been the warmest period in around 125,000 years.
  • Concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are at their highest for at least two million years.
  • Summer Arctic ice coverage is lower than any time in the last 1,000 years.
  • Sea levels are rising faster than in any previous century for 3,000 years.
  • Oceans are warming faster than any time since the last ice age.
  • Ocean acidification is at its highest for 26,000 years.

What can we do to mitigate the effects of climate change?

The report highlights the importance of taking action now to limit temperature rises to 1.5°C. It suggests the following key measures to put in place:

  • Rapidly shifting away from our reliance on coal-fired power stations and fossil fuels, which are the main driver of climate change.
  • Investing heavily in clean, renewable energy.
  • Increasing the use of public transport and electrical vehicles.
  • Halting deforestation.
  • Changing our dietary habits and food production methods, such as eating more plants and less meat, reducing food waste, and improving agricultural practices.

These measures could provide wider benefits to society, such as improving air quality and reducing healthcare costs.

How close is the apocalypse?

It is not too late to take action, but we must act now. It suggests mainstreaming effective and equitable climate action that will not only reduce losses and damages for nature and people but will also provide wider benefits.

When will the next IPCC report be published?

The next report, the AR7, is not expected to be published until around 2030, which gives us time to act and make a positive impact on our planet.
